Mini Albums 101

Today I've decided to run down a list of things that you will need to make a hand made mini album.  With Christmas right around the corner now is the time to whip up a few handmade Christmas gifts.

Tools you will need (keep in mind you don't have to have these exact things, these are just what I normally use)

Score Board and scoring tool. Martha Stewarts is my favorite because it has measurements every 1/8 of an inch but you can use any score board or even your cutter. I do not like the scoring tool that comes with the board so I use a stamping up score tool.
Bone folder. If you don't have a bone folder you can use anything flat to make your folds crisp. The cap of a glue stick or even a butter knife works just fine.
Paper Cutter. I use the Fiskers cutter where the cutting bed measures 6 1/4. I love it except I find that it doesn't actually cut where the wire is. It's slightly off but having the 6 1/4 cutting bed makes up for that flaw.  You can use any paper cutter you are comfortable with.
Glue - I use score tape to make my pages and atg gun to attach the patterned paper to the pages of the album. If you don't have access to score tape you can use wet glue or  red line tape. I just love the score tape's ease of tearing  and the super strong hold.

ATG- Adhesive transfer Gun.  There are several brands. I use the pink Scotch brand that I purches for 1/2 of at MIchaels. I get my refills online by the case to save money.

Card stock - I prefer to use Michaels brand or Paper Accents brand Card stock as it's not too thin and not to thick. I love Stamping up card stock but the amount that I use for an album makes the album more expensive to make.  You can get the Michaels brand card stock on sale for 3 packs for $10.  That's 150 sheets!

Patterned paper - Now I like to use a collection when making my albums so all pages coordinate. I'm not so nifty at finding mixed papers that look good together. I love die cuts with a view  and my most FAVORITE paper company is Simple Stories.  This way each page coordinates through out the album.
You can use any weight of  patterned paper.

Distressing ink - I like to use Tim Holtz distress ink on the edges of my patterned paper before I attach to the base pages in the album. Of course you do not have to do this step or even use Tim Holtz any inks will do.

Chipboard - I use medium weight chipboard that I purchase on-line at Walmart.com. You can even attach 2 pieces of cereal boxes to make your covers.
Tyveck- This is a strong envelope that you can get at any supply company. Often I use recycled envelopes I collect from work. If you can't get ahold of Tyveck you can make your binding with out it or even use duct tape. I just use it to make sure that my album covers and spine last longer than if I just used card stock alone.

Embellishments - I typically buy the Embellishments that match the paper collection that I'm using.  I even cut things out using my cricut and scrap pieces of the paper .

When I make an album I first make my pages then my covers/spine. Then I'll attach my pp to the pages and make my tags & page inserts by using the scrap pp from covering my pages. This way I can maximize my paper. I can often get 2 mini albums out of 1 pad of pp paper.

I'll be working on a series of posts and video's on my YouTube Channel to help those who are new to mini albums create their very own albums.

Smash book/Journal/Mini Album.

I wanted to make a smash book using the copic stich binding but I wanted a place for pictures and pockets as well so I combined a simple hidden hinge binding with the copic stich to make a mini album with smash pages in it.

The album in this video I used the stack the deck binding but the 2nd one I'm working on I used the hidden hinge binding system and it works so much better.

Here is the video for the first album. I'll post another video on my YouTube channel as soon a the album is completed.

Retro Flip Mini Album Tutorial

Hello all here is the tutorial for the "Birdhouse mini album" I have a video on my Youtube channel called "Retro Flip Mini Album Tutorial part 1" It should be done uploading soon. Part 2 is now up on YouTube.

You will need a total of 8 base pages .

Each base page will need these sheets of card stock.
7 by 8, 6 by 9 and 6 1/2 by 8

Score (when I say on the xx" side I mean that measurement is at the top of the score board)
6 by 9 sheet at 1/2 and 8 1/2 on the 9" side
6 1/2 by 8 sheet at 1/2 on the  6 1/2" side

The pockets for the pages:
Page style 1
4 sheets of 4 by 4" card stock. Score 1/2 and 3 1/2 on one side of the cs. Creating flaps. Do this to each of the sheets.
Tags for this page measure 2 3/4 by 3 3/4

Page style 2
1 sheet cs cut at 6 by 5 scored at 1/2 and 4 1/2" on the 5" side
2 sheets of cs cut at 4 by 4. Score 1/2 and 3 1/2" side on the 4" side
     Tags for this page measure 5 3/4 by 3 3/4 and 2 3/4 by 3 3/4

Page style 3
2 sheets of cs cut at 5 by 2 1/2 score 1/2 on 2 short sides and 1 long side
2 sheets of cs 5 by 4 score on the 5" side at 1/2 & 4 1/2"
     Tags for this page measure 2 1/4 by 3 3/4 and 3 3/4 by 3 3/4

Page style 4
1 sheet cs cut at 7 by 4 1/2 score on the  4 1/2 at 1/2 and 1/2 and  6 1/2" at the 7" side
2 sheets of cs cut at 4 by 4 score at 1/2 & 3 1/2" on 1 4"  side.
     Tags for this page measure 4 1/4 by 5 3/4 and 2 3/4 by 3 3/4

You will create 2 of each of these page styles to create a total of 8 pages.

The below part will be covered in the next video part 2. But I wanted all the measurements on the same post.

You will now need to create 4 library style pages.

1 sheet cs that measures  6 by 5 3 by 6.  Score the  3 by 6 sheet on the 6" side at 1/2 and 5 1/2". This is the pocket for the front of the undercut page. For the pocket on the back of the page you will need a sheet of cs that measures 7 by 3 1/2. Score on the 7" side at 1/2 and 6 1/2.

Pockets for inside pages. You will create 4 of each style.

You will need 4 sheets of cs cut at 4 1/4 by 9" Score on the 9" side at 1/2 and 8 1/2 " this will be the vertical pockets.
You will then need 4 sheets of cs cut at 4 by 8" Score on the 8" side at 1/2 and 7 1/2. This will be the horizontal pockets
You will need 4 sheets of cs cut at 9 by 3. Score on the 9" side at 1/2 and 8 1/2". This will be the smaller of the vertical pockets.

You don't have to create all of these pockets you can pick and choose what pockets you want on what pages. It's all up to you.

Hidden hinge binding
1 sheet cs cut at 8 by 11 and one sheet cut by 3 1/2 by 11.
Score on the following measurements with the 11" side at the top of the score board.
1 1/2, 1 3/4, 2  1/4, 2 3/4, 3 1/8, 3 5/8, 4 1/8, 4 1/2,5, 5 1/2, 5 7/8, 6 3/8, 6 7/8, 7 1/4, 7 3/4, 8 2/8, 8 5/8, 9 1/8, 9 5/8, 10, 10 1/2

3 1/2 by 11 sheet score with the 11" side at the top of the score board
1/2, 7/8, 1 3/8, 1 7/8 , 2 1/8

4 deconstructed hidden hinges for the undercut pages.
5 by 1 1/4
with the 1 1/4 side at the top of the score board score
1/8, 5/8, 1 1/8, 1 1/4

ALL MEASUREMENTS ARE IN INCHES. " SIGN MEANS INCHES. CS MEANS CARD STOCK.

Cartwheel mini Album tutorial

Hi all.

I used the Cartwheel paper collection and emblishments from Heidi Grace designs to make this album.

The album measures 8 by 6 1/2 the spine is 2 1/2 inches. I used the hidden hing binding from Paperphenomenon.

I designed this album using 8 1/2 by 11 cardstock. I find it harder and harder to find 12 by 12 kraft cardstock locally.

Here is a video of this album.

There are 6 pages in this album. Each page is made from one 8 1/2 by 11 sheet of cardstock and one  7 1/2 by 6 piece.

I posted 2 videos here if you prefer a visual tutorial.

This will be the base page. 8 1/2 by 11 cardstock (cs) Score on the 8 1/2 " side at 1/2 and 8. Score on the 11" side at 6.

Next cut off the flaps on the 5" side of the cardstock.
fold the flaps in and add score tape  and place the   7 1/2 by 6 sheet over the flaps to create a pocket. Flip the page over and fold the 5" flap.

Attach the above piece to the flaps on the base page.

This is what the front of the base page looks like. I've rounded the corners with my corner chomper.

There are several pockets and belly bands in this album. You will need to make a total of 2 page designs of each to make a total of 6 pages.

First page design
1 base page - Attach pocket to inside of flap and belly band to back of base page.

Inside pocket 6 X 3/4. Score 1/2" on 2 short and 1 long side.

The back of the page has a belly band.
8 1/2 X 2
Score 1/2 on both short side.

Inside of base page 1 with pocket.

Back of base page with belly band attached.

2nd page style.
1 base page needed.
This page style I used a border punch on the flap

Inside pocket. 7 X 3 1/2. Score on 2 short side and 1 long side.
Attach to inside of base page.

Apply score tape to the flaps and attach to the inside of the base page.

You will need to cut 2 of sheets of card stock at 6 X 4 3/4 . Score 1/2 on 2 long sides. These will be attached to the back of the page to make 2 pockets. You can use a border punch on the left side of the pocket.

In this picture you will see a gap between the pockets. Disregard that I measured one wrong when putting together this tutorial. the measurements are correct at 6 X 4 3/4.

The last of the page designs
You will need 1 base page.

1 sheet cs that measures 8 1/2 by 2 Score 1/2 on both short sides.

Attach this to the front flap.

Then you need to make a pocket for the inside of the page.
Cut cs at  8 1/2 X 3 1/2. Score on 2 short sides and 1 long side.

Apply score tape to the flaps. Be sure to but the long bottom flap on top of the 2 side flaps to prevent tags from getting stuck.

Attach pocket to inside of base page. As shown in the below picture.

You will need to make 2 of each of the above page designs if you want to make the album the same as mine.

Graphic 45 Design team 2013 audition

Hi all.

I'm going to audition for the Graphic 45 design team. I'm so excited to show you these projects I have created and review a couple that I already posted using Graphic 45 papers.

The first round is due by March 21.

So here are my 6 projects.

The first one is a calendar I made using the A place in time paper collection. I cut 1" by 1" squares for the dates and used stickers for the numbers. This measures 12" by 7. Each topper is held to the top with magnets. The back of the calendar also has magnets so it can be hung on a fridge or other metal object.

The Second project I made was a Mini album made from cards and envelopes. The cover measures 5 1/2 by  7 3/4 I used the secret Garden paper collection for this one. I just love this paper pack!

The following pictures are of the cards that are stuck in each envelope page.

This album I made using a chipboard cover and spine. The cover measures  7 1/2 by  8 1/2. I used the hidden hinge binding system. Each page is constructed using kraft cardstock.

This next album is made using Ladies diary paper collection from Graphic 45 and file folders from the office supply store. The cover measures  9 1/2 by 9 1/4. I used 7 gypsies binder rings to bind the album.

This next album measures  5 1/2 by 7 and has a chipboard cover and spine. The paper collection is called Memories by teresa collins. I made this album to house pictures of our recently departed cat Pounce. I loved how it turned out and can't wait to add more pictures and embelishments.

Here is a video and pictures.

The only way to properly show this next project is with a video I did on You Tube.

and the last is a 12 x 12 layout  I did using Olde Curosity Shop papers
